Spengler Cup

HC Davos is thinking of not maintaining the championship break between Christmas and New Year any longer.

This is what the president of HC Davos, Gaudenz Domenig, states in an interview with ice hockey magazine Slapshot (relayed by Südostschweiz). This would mean that in addition to the Spengler Cup, National League games would also be played in the New Year's Eve week.

The exclusivity of the traditional tournament is important to Domenig, however, this would not be endangered even with a parallel championship. Moreover, the compensation paid to the other National League clubs for the break would be eliminated as well as the compensation for the players of Team Canada and the HC Davos' reinforcements. According to Domenig, this is over half a million Swiss francs per season.

However, Domenig says that it will take at least a year to seriously discuss whether this will be the case. In 2022 the TV contracts of the Spengler Cup and also those of the league will expire.
