IIHF Women's World Championship

In the last game of the preliminary round, the Swiss women’s national team beat Germany 4-2 in a close matchup. However, it was not enough for a spot in the quarter-finals since Czechia lost to Sweden.

With two wins against Sweden (3-1) and Czechia (2-1), the newly-promoted team from Germany already secured its berth in the quarters before this evening’s game. Nonetheless, the Swiss put pressure on the Germans early on in the first period. Within 223 seconds, Switzerland scored three unanswered goals and carried a 3-0 lead into the locker room

In the second period, Switzerland tried to control this game and to suffocate Germany’s potent offense. Consequently, the game remained scoreless in the second period. But Germany was gaining momentum. After only 23 seconds in the third period, they scored their first goal. The Germans now started to put more pressure on the Swiss team, which resulted in several minor penalties for Switzerland. And – just the way it goes – Germany scored with a two-women advantage. Luckily, they did not manage to tie it up and Alina Müller scored her third goal of the evening –an empty netter– 52 seconds before the final horn.

Nonetheless, it was not enough to clinch a spot in the quarters. The Swiss team will now play Czechia in a best-of-three relegation round. However, at the moment, it is also not clear if a team will be relegated at all. At the annual IIHF congress in May, the Women’s Worlds could be extended from eight to ten teams as of 2019.
