IIHF Women's World Championship

The players of the Swiss women’s national team have their back against the wall: the team lost the first game of the relegation round against Czechia (2-4). The next game will take place on Thursday at 6 pm (CET).

13 years after the last relegation in Halifax (2004), Switzerland may once again end up in the lower division. The loss to Czechia was, however, simply not necessary. The team had enough chances to score early on in the game, but they failed to capitalize. Thus, it was the Czechian team who scored. Twice, their forwards duped the entire Swiss defense.

Daniela Diaz’s team was simply not efficient enough. Despite being the better team in the first period, having more power-play opportunities and more shots on goal, Switzerland could not capitalize their opportunities. And if one doesn’t score, the opponent usually does. With their third shot, Czechia scored their first and started to gain momentum before scoring their second goal. It was the same in the second period. Switzerland had enough opportunities to score, but it was Ledlova who scored Czechia’s goal number three. And even though Switzerland tried to come back, scoring two goals in the last eight minutes, it was not enough in the end; an empty netter sealed the deal for the team from Eastern Europe.
